The Style Stories: The Perfect Date Night Dress
I love a solid-gold excuse to dress up fancy. Sequins, velvet, lace... it's all good.
But when it comes to whittling down the myriad options on the high street, it can be tricky to choose the elusive 'perfect' party or date-night outfit, especially when there are so many events, and so many dress codes, to take into consideration. Office parties, family get-togethers, date nights, cocktails... you see where the issues can start. It's finding, and settling on, that fine line between underdressed and sequin-related temporary blindness.
Luckily, I think I've found the dress that spans all genres and suits all special occasions, from birthday dinners to big parties, and of course - date night. Irish fashion brand Cari's Closet got in touch late last year to offer me the choice of their gorgeous selection of party dresses, and the Taylor Long Sleeved Lace Dress, in navy blue, made me swoon on sight. Softer than black, navy suits everyone and instantly looks a little more luxe, especially when paired with black accessories. The high neck and long sleeves are offset by the mini length, which for me strikes the right balance; I'm more of a leg woman anyway...
As you can see, the Taylor dress is very heavily inspired by the Self Portrait Guipere Star dresses, with a high neck, long sleeves and ruffled skirt, all crafted in a lace created out of star shapes. I absolutely love Self Portrait but there's no way I could justify the cost for a special-occasion outfit, but luckily the Cari's Closet versions are half the price, so you can treat yourself without the guilt.
For me, occasionwear needs to be versatile to make it worth the cost; there's little point in dropping the dollar on such a 'wow!' item that you can only wear it once, twice at the most, before people start thinking that you literally have nothing else to wear. So the Taylor dress ticks those boxes too, as you can pair it with tights or bare legs depending on your event, the weather or if you can't be bothered to fake tan. Win-win. You can also choose to pop it on with platform sandals, classic courts or edgy heeled ankle boots, and it would look as glam with a faux fur coat as it would with a chic leather jacket.
The Taylor dress is probably a little more low-key, at first glance, than what someone would expect of a party wear pick from me, but I think this has the potential to be the perfect party dress - easy to wear, universally flattering, seriously versatile, and just the right amount of glam, even for the wardrobe wallflowers among us.
